Friction Calculator — Full Guide

What It Does
The Friction Calculator measures your activation energy — how much mental resistance is blocking your next task. Slide three controls: resistance (how much you don't want to do it), dopamine (how much reward you expect), and environment (how many distractions surround you). The tool gives you a score from 5-100 and a specific strategy based on your result.
How to Use It
- Pick one task you're currently avoiding. Be specific — "write the quarterly report," not "get organised."
- Set Resistance (1-10) — How much do you not want to do this? Be honest. If your gut says 8, don't talk yourself down to 5.
- Set Dopamine (1-10) — How much satisfaction or reward do you expect from doing it? If the task has zero intrinsic reward, set it low.
- Set Environment (1-10) — How distracted or disruptive is your current environment? Loud cafe, messy desk, phone buzzing = high number.
- Click Calculate. The tool returns your score, a verdict, and a breakdown of which factors contribute most.
Understanding Your Score
- Low (5-39): Low friction. Your brain is ready. Turn off notifications and start immediately — don't let momentum slip.
- Medium (40-69): Moderate resistance. Use a 2-minute micro-trigger. Commit to just 2 minutes of the task with zero expectations. Your nervous system will carry you the rest of the way.
- High (70-100): High procrastination danger. Forcing it with willpower will cause burnout. Reduce the task scope by 80%, eliminate one environmental distraction, and try again in 20 minutes.
Tips for Best Results
- Don't manipulate the scores. The tool works when you're honest. If you set Resistance to 3 because you feel like you "should" want to do the task, you're cheating yourself.
- Check the breakdown. The three factors (resistance, dopamine, environment) are broken out individually. If environment is your highest factor, the fix is physical (move desks, wear headphones). If resistance is highest, the fix is psychological (shrinking the task).
- Use it before every work block. A quick 10-second check surfaces friction before it steals your session. Taking the test is itself a micro-trigger — it moves you from thinking about the task to engaging with it.
- Track your score trends. If the same task type consistently scores high, that's data — the task needs a structural change, not more willpower.
What Problem It Solves
Procrastination isn't a personality flaw — it's a signal that your activation energy exceeds your available resources. The Friction Calculator externalises that signal. Once you see the score and the factor breakdown, procrastination becomes a diagnostic problem (fix the environment, shrink the task) instead of a moral one ("I'm lazy").
